American College of Education Practicum: Frequently Asked Questions

This page answers the questions ACE MSN students ask most about the 200-hour practicum: who can serve as a preceptor, what counts as a site and a project, how accreditation works, and why the field experience is not a nurse practitioner rotation. Confirm program specifics directly with ACE before you commit to any arrangement.

The basics of the ACE practicum

The ACE practicum is a 200-hour supervised field experience required in each MSN track. It is built around three student-sourced pieces: a preceptor or mentor, an approved site, and a project.

ACE's graduate nursing programs are MSN Nurse Educator and MSN Nurse Administrator, offered through RN-to-MSN and BSN-to-MSN pathways. The college also offers RN-to-BSN, RN-to-MSN, and an Ed.D. in Nursing Education. Because the MSN tracks are education and administration focused, the practicum is an education or administration experience, not clinical patient care.

Preceptors, sites, and projects

The single most important thing to understand is that ACE makes the student responsible for finding all three components. If any one of the preceptor, site, or project is missing, the practicum cannot start.

The preceptor supervises and verifies your hours, the site is where the work happens, and the project is the defined work you complete over 200 hours. All three have to align with each other and with your track's learning outcomes before ACE approves the practicum. When self-sourcing stalls, our independent service secures all three as one package.

Accreditation and program structure

ACE's baccalaureate and master's nursing programs are accredited by CCNE, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. They are not accredited by ACEN.

The graduate nursing offerings are the MSN Nurse Educator and MSN Nurse Administrator tracks, plus an Ed.D. in Nursing Education. There is no nurse practitioner program, which is why the practicum is never a clinical NP rotation. Always verify current accreditation and program details with ACE directly.

Questions

Good to know

Does ACE have an NP program?

No. American College of Education does not offer a nurse practitioner program. Its graduate nursing tracks are the MSN Nurse Educator and MSN Nurse Administrator, plus an Ed.D. in Nursing Education, so there is no NP path and no direct patient care practicum.

How many hours is the ACE practicum?

The ACE MSN practicum is 200 hours in each track. The hours are supervised by your preceptor at an approved site and tied to a defined project that maps to your program's learning outcomes.

Who finds the preceptor, site, and project?

You do. ACE requires the student to find their own preceptor or mentor, a location, and a project. Because that is difficult to arrange alone, many students use an independent placement service to secure all three.

What kind of preceptor does the ACE practicum need?

An experienced professional whose role matches your track, meaning nursing education for the Nurse Educator track or nursing leadership and administration for the Nurse Administrator track. The preceptor does not need to be a nurse practitioner because the practicum is not clinical.

Is the ACE practicum a clinical rotation?

No. ACE's MSN tracks are Nurse Educator and Nurse Administrator, so the practicum is an education or administration field experience. It is not a nurse practitioner rotation and does not involve direct patient care.

What MSN pathways does ACE offer?

ACE offers the MSN Nurse Educator and MSN Nurse Administrator tracks through both RN-to-MSN and BSN-to-MSN pathways. It also offers RN-to-BSN, RN-to-MSN, and an Ed.D. in Nursing Education.

Is ACE accredited by CCNE or ACEN?

ACE's baccalaureate and master's nursing programs are accredited by CCNE, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. They are not accredited by ACEN. Confirm current accreditation status directly with ACE.

Can my current job count as the practicum site?

Often it can, if your employer will host the project, provides access to the work, and a qualified preceptor is available there for the full 200 hours. ACE approves the site, so confirm the specifics with the school.

What is a workable practicum project?

A project that fits the site, matches your track's learning outcomes, and can genuinely be completed in 200 hours. Nurse Educator projects tend to involve curriculum or staff development, while Nurse Administrator projects involve process, policy, or operational work.

Are you part of American College of Education?

No. We secure a qualified preceptor or mentor, an approved site, and a workable project so your 200 practicum hours can be completed.
